What You Need to Know When Buying a Rug

When it comes to area rugs there are many different styles and colors to choose from. We have design consultants on staff to help you select the right color and size for your home.

Some things to think about when selecting a rug

60/30/10 Rule

Finding a rug that fits your space sometimes can be overwhelming. Customers often have various colors and patterns to work with in their existing home, and then they try to throw in a rug and it can be daunting.

So, when decorating a particular room, divide the colors into percentages:
60% of a dominant color
30% of a secondary color
10% of an accent color

In a room setting that is typically;
60% of the room's color is the walls
30% of the room's color is the upholstery or area rug
10% of the room's color in either a throw pillows or accent piece

What size?

Should all the legs of our chairs be on our off our rug? Under the table or in front of the table? Truth is today there really is no right or wrong when it comes to this. What you DO need to think about is area rugs are used to frame a space. And you don’t want it to cover too much of that beautiful hardwood flooring you had installed so here are a few guidelines when it comes to size.

All legs of chair on or off the area rug?

Having the first 2 legs and other 2 legs off on an area rug can help to connect the furniture and the rug together.

Smaller rugs with no legs on an area rug in a space are nice for statement rugs (bold, bright and or large defined pattern) used as an accent piece to the furniture in the room.

Having all the legs on the rug can make a room look more uniform.

How much space should I allow to show my existing floors if I want it to cover a majority of my dining room floor?

18” between the rug and perimeter of room is standard.

What should the size of my rug be under my bed?

You can do one of two things. Have a rug that goes entirely under the bed but should extend 12-18 inches outside of the bed. Or you can have an accent rug at the foot of the bed possibly a 4 x 6 depending on the size of the bed.

I am putting an area rug under my dining room table, what size should it be?

Allow 24 inches to extend past the table. Also note any walkways that may be beside the table, you do not want to have the rug extend into those.
